100% genki Tour - New Music From Japan

New Music From Japan – the “100% Genki” tour

http://www.newmusicfromjapan.com/

Japanese music takes on the UK in May

100% Genki brings four of Japan’s best contemporary music acts over to tour the UK’s main music events, for the first time.

Over ten days in May, the Japanese acts will play the UK’s most subscribed music events and festivals - as well as a special one off London event - bringing a taste of the Japanese music culture and energy to the British musical ear. As much visual as aural, their unique style is not to be missed. Time to expand your mind.

The tour is bought to you by the organisers of the annual Fuji Rock festival, Smash, and is supported by Strummerville, the Joe Strummer New Music foundation. Please check below for short band info, links and the Tour Dates.

80kidz:

Following in the footsteps of genre-mashing electronic artists such as Surkin, M.I.A, The Bang Gang DJs and Vitalic, 80kidz are ready to show the world what Tokyo can do. They have performed alongside Justice, Boys Noize and Hot Chip and remixed Cazals, CSS, Black kids and many more. Believe the hype.
http://www.myspace.com/80kidz

De De Mouse:

De De Mouse is the abstract, ambient brainchild of bespectacled Tokyo-based studio boffin Daisuke Endo. His fanbase ranges from the Tokyo fashion community to the crème de la crème of Japan’s J-Pop pop royalty and music critiques.
http://www.myspace.com/dedemouse

Riddim Saunter:

Riddim Saunter, influenced by the Ska Boom of the late 90s, are famed for their frantic live shows. The band’s up-close, in-your-face style of performance won them support for the Go-Team’s first ever Japan tour.
http://www.myspace.com/riddimsaunter

Tucker:

Tucker is a hyperactive one-man acrobatic band / turntablist / organ playing whirlwind. His confounding, high-energy mix of rock and roll, punk, pop, and hip-hop leaves critics fumbling for words; someone not entirely hip-hop, not entirely rock, not entirely retro, and perhaps not ever entirely serious has left many at a loss. http://www.myspace.com/tuckerelectone

Tour Dates:

Fri 15th May – The Great Escape, Brighton
Sat 16th May – The Great Escape, Brighton
Sun 17th May - Futuresonic, Manchester
Tues 19th May – Secret Strummerville Yard Party
Thurs 21st May - Stag & Dagger festival, London
Fri 22nd May - Liverpool Sound City, Liverpool

“Supporting this tour is in line with what we do here at Strummerville - we give opportunities to musicians who would not normally have access to them. We are committed to help break down cultural and physical borders and boundaries around music – we’re really excited to support this exceptional musical talent out of Japan.” – Strummerville

Q & A with Smash London:

Why did you want to do this?
We'd like to present a snapshot of talent from Japan - while people internationally are increasingly engaged with various aspects of contemporary Japanese culture (food, anime, fashion, design) Japanese music is still something most aren't familiar with. As a Japanese promoter we of course take pleasure in bringing back to the UK some of the excellent acts we work with in Japan, and giving these artists a first footstep in finding an international audience.

How did you pick the bands?

We worked with our office in Tokyo, to put forward a diverse group of acts who we thought represented a good cross section of styles, and whose music would appeal to English audiences.

What is good about these bands?
They're all influenced by music from around the world (UK included) but still maintain a distinctly Japanese element - whether it's DE DE MOUSE's flashes of 8bit brilliance or Tucker's crazy looping one-man-band, the acts could only have come from Japan...!

Why these festivals?

The festivals are perfect platforms to present new talent - full of young people hungry for new sounds and open to new artists. UK audiences are very receptive, and we hope presenting the artists in this way will help win them some new fans!

Tell us about each band:

De De Mouse - I'll just quote something I read on a blog recently – “How does a Japanese dude make prettier, funkier, more soulful Pop music with a laptop and some voice-altering software than the entirety of the American music industry with all their millions of dollars and lavish recording equipment?”
From http://www.imageyenation.com/?itemid=4113

Tucker - What we've all been waiting for ... a one man whirlwind, who plays Electone organ, theremin, guitar, bass, drums and turntables, and then proceeds to set his equipment on fire and do a hand stand on his organ.

Riddim Saunter - Genre defying rocking 6-piece mixing pop, Shibuya Kei, ska, UK rock and dance influences to blistering effect.

80kidz - Tokyo's brightest stars of the club scene come to the UK for the first time ... having performed alongside international stars back in Japan, we're looking forward to having them here!

What can we expect along the tour?
Fantastic new music, fish & chips on the beach and a few lost in translation moments

Kikumoto Allstars 'House Music' - new album on Gigolo

Press Release
Kikumoto Allstars
‘House Music’
Released: June 2009
Gigolo Recordings
Distributed by: NEWS

DJ Hell’s International Deejay Gigolo Imprint brings the debut album release from Australia´s Kikumoto Allstars: HOUSE MUSIC!!! In the spirit of the original Chicago Acid House of Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard and Adonis, and with the intensity of modern dance, comes Kikumoto Allstars aka DJ/Producer Cam Farrar.

“The inspiration for this album came from the original Chicago House from the mid 1980’s. The tracks from this era have an innocence and purity that I felt was somewhat lost in modern electronic music. I wanted to capture all I loved about this music but put it in context with where we are today.”

Kikumoto Allstars holds a candle to the original style of the thing we call´HOUSE MUSIC!´ This debut album is acid, is analogue, is heavy, is jacking, is melodic, is dark penetrating male vocals versus sexual femme vocales, is Bass… is here to make you move and remember the pioneering roots that bought us all to the dance floor.

Cam Farrar was first drawn to electronic music when he saw Devo on Australian television in the early 1980's. As a teenager, inspired by punk and new wave, Farrar began his career in bands, hitting the skins and song writing. With the 90's dance music revolution underway Farrar was swept up. Australia was now experiencing its own halcyon days with warehouse and bush parties beating through the musical landscape.

As an album we have two very distinct halves, the first being more musical and quite modern in terms of production, but designed to map the landscape ahead. The first track, EVERYBODY is basically the “synopsis of the album…” The bassline drives the whole track; Complete with authentic Fairlight orchestra stabs.” On I´LL MAKE YOU JACK, we find “ a song about dancing!. A bassline and drum machine, reminiscent of the old acid house trax of 1986-1987.”

CAN'T STOP THE HOUSE, is an immediate classic, featuring Fi-B Haven and lyrics from the 1987 Thompson & Lenoir track ‘Can’t Stop the House’ with some of my own. We love the track and thought it would be cool re-introduce it to the world.”

BENDING TIME is designed for the breakdown moment, and maybe a dry ice machine. “A track that began as a minimal drum track probably became the most complex track on the album. The inspiration came from the 1985 Virgo / Marshall Jefferson track ‘Rhythm Track’ however morphed into a pitch bent, time warp that twists and ties itself into knots before spitting itself out into another galaxy.

DCO is reminiscent of Mr Fingers principle of taking “a simple track, and a incessant arpeggio that frantically bounces along like a bus driver on speed pushing through peak hour traffic!”

The aptly titled LAST TRAIN TO CHI TOWN is a good follow on from the Larry Heard inspired DCO, taking the listener on a musical journey through Mr. Fingers home town of Chicago. Layers of heavy chords and beautiful melodies, which were “improvised and recorded in one take that was quite a bizarre and magical moment. It reminds me of train travel watching the scenery flashing by, lost in the music, lost in my head!” Continuing the musical odyssey in to SAGITTARIUS, Kikumoto Allstars “answer to Marshall Jefferson’s Virgo. This one would be on high rotation if I were an astronaut traveling to distant constellations.”

Back down on earth but spinning through Time Space we come to the final part to the album. WAREHOUSE DAYS is, as the songs name sake suggest, about the dance floor and the environments that gave birth to this genre of House Music. If we were being literal here we would be talking about the infamous club of 80’s Chicago. But right now, in 2009, we need to talk about the places more personal to us, our Generations Warehouses, the place where Kikumoto Allstars “truly discovered dance music. Reminiscing about one of those special underground parties, in a warehouse, in a city, somewhere.”

With JUST A FEELIN we are kept in this environment! The song aim is “to capture the adrenalin and anticipation you feel at the club at the beginning of a great set. Keeps teasing to give you something but pulling it back and not quite letting go.” Which leads nicely to JACK THE HOUSE; “the first true Kikumoto Allstars track. It’s all about the TB-303, still sounding fresh in an old skool way.” SHED is pure dark dance floor material and “inspired by parties at the docklands in Melbourne, Australia when I was growing up. Nameless tracks, nameless people all smiling, all dancing to the beat of a drum.”

Finally, we come to HOUSE MUSIC, a tribute the world we know and love, but done with a tongue firmly in-cheek. “Displaying the great simplicity of house music we know and love, nice chords, fat bass line, big drum rolls and a repetitive vocal hook. As it says on the box, H-H-H-H, H-H H-House Music!

Kikumoto Allstars and International Deejay Gigolo Record would like you to know that all “the tracks on this album were produced using the analogue synth’s and drum machines that defined the original house music - Roland TR-909, TR-808, TR-707, SH-101, JX-8P, Juno range, and the TB-303 - paying homage to the Roland Corporation’s Tadao Kikumoto, the brains behind these now legendary machines.”

DJ Hell in Elle Mag Portugal

Monday, April 6, 2009

really like this from the Bugged Out Hot Chip comp

it's the opener for disc two and sets the tone tres nicely.

DJ Hell on Miami

Your favourite gig..
Gold Rush ruled the whole weekend.. (Gigolo at the Gold Rush Strip Bar - tits and ass)

Your favourite DJ:
and Radio Slave was the top DJ of the week

If you have any funny / interesting Miami stories...
the funny story is that you don't get even a sandwich on a business class flight from Miami to NYC.

Best track?
Best track was new Jamie Jones from the album on crosstown rebel dont know the name of the song (summertime)...and a track called chocopop jazzmuchael

Guy Gerber on Miami

as always Miami was exactly like i expected it to be. Flamingo and bikinis ,even though it was slightly colder this year. But i love this GTA feeling of living in a city full of extras.

I really liked the Sunday school of degenerates, even though the rain started pouring during my set and i had to stop in the middle.

my favorite person of playing was Seth Troxler, man of the moment. I also had some really funny conversations with him.

the most funny thing was that while i was fighting with my girl friend in a taxi, the driver turned back to us, with his one eye (yes, he was a cyclop)and said :"even if his dick is that big (pointing a big coca cola bottle) he is really doesn't worth it. You should come and have some good times with me!!"

And the track i like the most it's a remix Seth made for a track called voodoo, but I don't know the artist name. But it had a super cool vocal on it that talks about going to the doctor :-)

Radio Slave on Miami

Best Party:

The beatport one was the best for me as it's always amazing to play outside in the sun with friends, and it's a pretty relaxed affair.

who your favourite person was playing...

Too many to mention and that's not a bad thing as the quality of music was super high this year !!!

if you have any funny / interesting miami stories...

Well, my girlfriend and I bumped into a guy who had lost his motorbike after picking up two girls and taking them to their hotel room...He had a massive smile on his face and looked so happy but had lost his $5000 bike...This was just one of the many freaks we met on south beach !

and please tell me your track – or two - of the conference:

The Michel Cleis remix of Baeka on Rekids and Barry Manilow's Copacobana....

Erol Alkan on Miami

The Vagabond is a beautiful oasis in downtown Miami, the vibes were strong, the planets aligned and Late Of The Pier were so good that I became a dribbling fanboy all over again. First time seeing Rye Rye and she took the proverbial roof off, Andy Butler from Hercules & Love Affair played fantastic disco, and I would have let him carry on for my selfish needs rather then take over the record players myself.

My track of the week was either the Aeroplane remix of Sebastian Tellier or In Flagranti's 'Brash & Vulgar'.

A Bugged Out Mix by Hot Chip

A BUGGED OUT MIX - BY HOT CHIP

Following on from the raucous scenes at a packed out Fire for their very own Bugged Out launch party, Hot Chip are the next act up to follow in the footsteps of Erol Alkan, Miss Kittin, Klaxons and Felix Da Housecat in compiling A Bugged Out Mix...

Despite a feverish schedule that has taken in numerous side projects, solo records, countless dancefloor-igniting remixes, production duties and, of course relentless touring of the globe, the brilliantly off-kilter five-headed electro pop colossus known as Hot Chip have somehow found the time to assemble a mix for their good friends at Bugged Out.

Indeed, in following the classic Bugged Out format the album comprises of 2 discs (Bugged Out and Bugged In) Hot Chip have created a mix fortified and 100% Ready For The Floor: The Bugged Out side features the kind of techno and house Felix Martin, Al Doyle and Joe Goddard play out regularly with tracks from John Tejada, Mark Romboy, Dominik Eulberg & Gabriel Ananda to name but a few. Also included is a new exclusive Hot Chip tune called ‘Take It In’.

By contrast the Bugged In side is a dream house party mix thrown down by Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard and Owen Clarke including everything from widescreen pop and smooth RnB ballads to grime. Being Hot Chip they’ve lent themselves to remixing duties too, exclusively reworking Fence collective member The Pictish Trail’s ‘Winter Home Disco’ and Gang Gang Dance’s ‘House Jam’. They even convince Terence Trent Darby and Dizzee Rascal go toe to toe on the dancefloor with an inspired mash up of ‘Wishing Well‘ and ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’ and a house party wouldn’t be a house party without classics from Hall and Oats, The Doobie Brothers, Luther Vandross and Fleetwood Mac commanding the airwaves now would it?

This stella mix for Bugged Out is the only scheduled release from Hot Chip in 09 as they start work on the follow up to last year’s ‘Made In The Dark’.

“The idea for Bugged Out was something altogether more considered, poised and subtle - a chance to turn a cold eye upon all the records that we've been playing in clubs over the last couple of years and fuse them into some kind of monstrous, all-destroying whole.” – Felix On Bugged Out

“The question was posed: 'What would Hot Chip play at a drunken house party, hidden from the critical eye of the international DJ community?' The answer, it seems, was Luther Vandross and Terence Trent D'arby. Please don't hate us! It’s also a collection of songs that we play out regularly, remixes that we are proud of, and old favourites that we decided to somehow collect together” - Joe On Bugged In

this is how not to do Miami...

let's start at the start.

Arrived on Thursday night and bumped in to Josh Wink et al in the hotel lobby where i was staying, and where they were staying too... they invited me to dinner in 15 minutes, so i dumped my bags, had a quick shower, and off i popped... Got drunk at the dinner very quickly (let's call it jetlag) and ended off the evening of tapas and vino by swapping 'facts' with people. My favourite fact, and the only one i can seem to ever remember, is 'did you know that you can't lick your own elbow'... i had steve bug really, really trying to prove this one wrong, he almost did, mais non. he could not.

okay so i didnt really end it here.

from here, i joined, josh, ovum label manager matt and two other dudes at the grass party for tommie sunshine... wooooow. whilst he played some mental gabba trance shit inside... i listened to hall and oates outside :) from here got a lift in a massive range rover thing (so pimp, so miami) to the minus party. stayed for a bit of troy pierce, had a little dance and then went to a much more important party to meet my friends. yes. a strip bar.

the dude of gigolo (mr gigolo or mr hell to some people), dj hell, came up with the ingenious idea to hold his miami party at the goldrush.. i knew it was a strip bar, but i dont think i fully 'got it' (although i was here a few years ago and ended up comedy pole dancing myself, but that's another story). met my trusty friend 'Rave' and Fiona and Nathan from the Whip outside and 10 minutes later we were inside, drinking white russians and putting dollar bills down stripper's knickers... ace fun!

from here we popped over the road to Space and the beginning of my demise. managed to get in after a lot of blagging (the list closed 10 minutes before we got there).. managed to catch the end of Tiefschwarz's set and was great to see them! nicked some rich people's drinks, bumped into Luciano and that's my last memory... next thing i know im in the hotel lobby of the Manderin, when i was staying at the Mondrion, trying to get hold of Rave and tell her to let me upstairs into our room... i'd lost my room key, blackberry and purse and had no idea how to find her. the receptionists eventually 'got it' and told me and my taxi driver (who came in with me to make sure i didnt do a runner) that i was in the wrong hotel... found my way back to the mondrion, found rave and the dudes from the whip asleep in bed... woke them up and told them i was coming with them to ultra fest. of course! ... i later found out that i had fallen asleep on a sofa in space and the bouncers had ejected me, nice!

changed clothes into my amazing peacock Kaftan and off we popped in The Whip tour bus to ultra fest. i think by this point it was around 10am so it was just people setting up their equipment onstage, which is actually quite a buzz to be around. hung out in the tour bus, got Fiona to draw a unicorn on my arse, as i have plans to get a tattoo of one there, and had a mini sleep before they went on stage... it was decided that when they went on stage, i was to be the backing dancer, and so i did! i stood behind fi and every time her hair went swinging as she bashed them drums, so did mine. best part was after, when i walked off whilst they dismantled and i had four people tell me 'good set'. hehe. thanks i really did a lot.

from here, they went off to do another gig and i went to see josh wink play... hung out with josh, the crew and D'Julz (who looks like david guetta) then went to see luciano and loco dice and carl cox etc in carl's arena... from here it got blurry, i remember seeing david guetta come running on stage with the black eyed peas in the main arena, riton play in an obscure arena, and the next thing i see the lovely whip again, who saved my arse totally. At which point i fell asleep on a grass hill and they got their tour manager to take me back to my hotel. i was so asleep he had to carry me to the lobby, where josh and his girlfriend, also named kim, found me moaning at security and took me to their room to sleep on their sofa! life savers!

so this was the end of day 1 / rolled into day 2.

saturday morning i woke very early and found my way to my room (had still lost my room key and rave was out when i first got back)... slept for a bit more and then hung out by the pool all day, catching up with some peoples in the process (loads of people were staying there!)... decided i would take it easy this night (i had already missed half the parties, including erol alkan's, the night before anyways).... popped to the beatport pool party in the day and saw hell, radio slave and damien lazarus play and then came back to the news that fiona was coming to the hotel and was 'up for it'... which meant game over. fiona, nathan and bruce arrived, we hung out at the jezebel party, then went to the innervisions party for a bit of dixon, then to nic fanciulli's party... and that's my last memory until i 'came round' swimming in the ocean with fiona, nathan, simian mobile disco and some other peoples, none of which i had met before! had some sand fights with fi, ran around a bit, took some photos and then went to round off at sunday school for degenerates. due to me not having a phone, none of us could get in. so they all made me leave with them, so i did but then decided to go back. went back and spent the day walking around in heels and my red 'prom dress' dancing and having a laugh to the likes of paul and toddy from ra, goli, guy gerber, steve bug, bugged marco corola, and i cant remember who else. was a very nice end of miami fun party, although the rain was a bit rainy.

and finally, around 9pm, as the sun was going down, i was last spotted with my shoes off, walking down the street trying to hail a cab.... zing.
